Sydney Water
Context
In the 1990s, within Sydney Water’s area of operations, there were a number of unsewered areas that did not have reticulated sewerage services. At a relatively high cost, Sydney Water was progressively providing sewerage solutions to these areas based on public health and environmental prioritisation.
A number of these wastewater schemes were delivered through the Priority Sewerage Program (PSP). Initiated by the NSW Government in 1997, the PSP was established to improve sewerage services, including sewer reticulation, transfer, treatment, and discharge schemes within 16 unsewered communities and townships that had high environmental sensitivity ratings owing to their proximity to drinking water catchments, rivers, beaches, or national parks.
Solution
In 2002, the PSP Alliance was contracted to deliver the program.
As a key member of the PSP Alliance Leadership Team, Mark Simister was accountable for providing strategic leadership across the Alliance and ensuring outstanding outcomes were achieved within a constructive and collaborative culture. This included making sure MWH (now Stantec) provided resources with the right skills and mindset to the Alliance, at the right time, for efficient and effective delivery.
Between 1997 and 2001, the PSP Alliance sewered the 16 communities and townships.
In 2001, the PSP was extended by the NSW Government and by late 2012 a further seven villages were sewered.
In 2010, the PSP won an Alliancing Association of Australasia Excellence Award for the best long-term alliance in Australia.

The PSP Alliance consisted of Sydney Water, MWH (now Stantec), John Holland Group, United Group Infrastructure, and Manidis Roberts (now RPS).
