Transport Network Reconstruction Program
Queensland Transport and Main Roads
Between 2010 and 2013, regional Queensland was hit by cyclones with heavy rainfall causing significant flooding. One of the worst affected areas was the Fitzroy Region where nearly 1,000km of road was destroyed.
A team from MWH (now Stantec), guided by Mark Simister as regional executive, was deployed to rebuild the damaged road network and restore access along key tourism, freight, and mining routes.
As the regional program office, Mark’s team partnered with Transport and Main Roads’ staff to manage all aspects of the program’s delivery, from construction and design to environmental and safety management. Unlike most urban areas where there are alternate routes, the damaged roads were essential for the safe transportation of people, goods, and materials to support community and industry.
At the peak of construction, 15 individual contractors worked simultaneously on more than 50 sites across the region. Mark’s team managed this vast amount of work and delivered the project on time and within the available budget.
Through building effective relationships between MWH, its partners, Transport and Main Roads, and across the supply chain, the Fitzroy Region was regarded as the highest performing team on the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.
At the end of the recovery period, over $1.5 billion worth of works had been achieved, with exceptional client satisfaction results.
